I think, you should continue what you are doing, and I agree that targeting popular keywords is the best way to get search engine traffic, and definitely you have to search and identified the keywords to target.

Choosing good keywords for your websites is a skill that all online marketers need to master. Writing up webpages without paying attention to the keywords you are using will hamper the success of your website.

Choosing the right keyword is one of the important factors in doing On-Page Optimization!.. If you want to have higher chances in getting into top rankings on SERP, as much as possible avoid using competitive keywords..

Be creative when selecting your keyword, ie know what the search phrases/keyword those people use when they are looking for the product you are optimizing but then be choosy. If there are unusual words associated with your content that you think people might search for, or misspellings, include them sparingly & Target keyword phrases that are not too competitive.

Google can provide you the best option to choose useful and user friendly keywords. Please ask from Google.

You are doing OK about Google adwords, you should pay attention to the Search volume, the higher it is, the better, and the competition, the lower, the better. It means you should try to find keywords with high search volume and low competition. It sounds difficult, but believe me it is possible. Try also to consider the CTR.
Good luck :)

If you have a young site, then I would suggest going for fairly low competition keywords. There's no way that you will compete for those prized major keywords that bring in massive volumes of traffic.
(That said, it's worth it to put them on your pages. When combined with other keywords you're sure to get a few "long tail" searches including them in time. But just don't build your site on the idea that you'll compete for them because you just won't!)

I agree, you should continue what you are doing and also check the keywords density and prominence for targeted page.
