I have been submitting my sites and blogs to various directories both free and paid. i wonder whether google will penalize such sites which have been found to get many back links from directories freely? I am concerned about this. Can someone explain whether it is okay to do with google. I could not find it in google's TOS, though.

Well the answer is Yes. Google does penalize sites that get too many backlinks fast. But look at it this way, all directories will not approve/publish your sites at the same time. The slower the directories publish your website the better. This will work in your favor.

Just keep the submissions slow and try not to get too many backlinks in a short time.

I have tried upto 300 submissions per day for a site total 3000 submissions and didn't get any penalty. I agree with geek that big G won't find all directory backlinks at the same time.

I would still recommend that you submit to 100 directories per day to build 'continuous' backlinks :)

Try to use the different titles and description for your site to submit your site to directories.
