We can see clearly that there have been 1000s of free directories out there which do approve almost all sites when we submit. Now the question arise then why do we need to go for paid directories, if we can get everthing through free directories?

I go with free directories. Paid directories don't make much sense to me unless it's a VERY competitive niche. :)
Free directories with high pr is best

I don't agree with that :) Submitting to PR 0 new directories might also be a good idea because anyway the page on which your listing appears (in directory) doesn't have a PR even if the directory has a high PR.

I submit my site to the directories to increase the backlink so I prefer to submit it to free directories instead of paid.

Everything is just the same either you submit your site in paid or free directories. Both will help increase back links to your site.. And for me, I prefer free directories than paid ones.

I usually go for free ones but few paid directories are very good and well maintained. So no harm submitting in paid directories.
