If you're just starting out, or you're a SEO veteran, Snowbird/Virtual Media Options has a great list here for you to utilize. I would recommend submitting to all of them, varying your anchor text (maybe one - three keywords).

Before choosing the Title, or anchor text of the links your submitting make sure to use https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox

You can enter what words you want to win and it will show you about how many clicks you can assume you will obtain. From what I hear you can multiply the number of clicks by 20 to get overall searches for a term since Google assumes you will only get a 5% click rate (20 x 5 =100%).

When choosing keywords it's always advantageous if you choose words that overlap and help each other i.e. "Green Buckets" "Red Buckets" "Brown Buckets". Your short term goal can be to win those more specific or sometimes called "long tail-keywords" as they are usually less optimized for, but may get some searches. Once you win the specific type of "Buckets" then you can attempt to win the big "Buckets" as a keyword since your past anchor text contains that word; it won't be as difficult to say go from "Green Buckets" to "Buckets" whereas "Green Buckets" to "ShowerCaps" would be like starting over.

After utilizing directories and daily visiting this list/forum you can then move on to writing articles. If your current site isn't set up to allow for these articles you can post your articles in article directories to obtain more backlinks (people linking to your site) and possible traffic.

Now you can move on to social bookmarking once your directory/article base is covered. Submit to the social bookmarking sites...only the best content/story your site has to offer with a catchy title. The more ignorant/reckless the title the better ;).

If you find yourself with free time you can always write more original articles so SEO work can never truly be done..we just have to remind ourselves that. Most of all stay focused and determined...if your left standing after a year of work chances are you will be winning some great keywords. There are obviously other techniques to SEO but the basics are surely the mentioned above.

I will try this method for my new site :) Looks better than written !
Anyway, link building is no.1 in SEO, excepting long tail keyword SEO tactics :)
