Which other ways you are using to promote your web site other than link exchange and social bookmarking?

I have almost given up on article submissions to article directories. Except one or two listings all other other results are not shown in google results.

I use yahoo answers for one of my sites but you can't expect a lot of traffic.

The problem with submitting articles is that the majority of the traffic goes to the article directory site. If you are lucky, you will get a few visitors from each article. In most cases you are better off posting the article on your site (or create a blog) so that you get all the traffic.

Because articles tend to be long, there is a greater opportunity for them to be flagged as duplicate content if the article is submitted to many directories. If the article is "spun" or re-written properly, for each submission, then the duplicate content problems can be avoided.

For me writing an article is a lot of work for one backlink and very few visitors. With my skill set, I can get more bang for my buck elsewhere. That's not to say there are not people successful with submitting articles. It's just that it takes quite a few articles to equate to a reasonable amount of traffic.

Try posting on classified ad websites. craiglists is big and will send traffic. Smaller classified ad websites send some traffic too.

Aside from the main methods, free classified ad posting can be useful. It's particularly good if you have a product or service that is localized, not digital.

It also does help with seo, I think. For instance I put quite a few ads up for a local flyer distribution service. Got a few calls direct from the ads. But the best part was that I ended up on page one for Google for a search for the keywords I used in many of those ads.

This may have resulted for other reasons, but I doubt it. I hadn't done any other form of link building at that stage - at least as far as I can recall.

I don't agree with Article being good, News/press release is definitely a good option. Forum posting in related forums is another good way to get word of mouth being active in your targeted audience.
