Hosting package Windows or Linux?

Hi,

Many people do not have enough knowledge of computer and they always confuse to purchase the hosting plan whether to chose Windows or Linux. Here is the guideline to purchase the hosting package:

- Check whether you are using any Microsoft technology in your site like ASP, .Net, MSSQL database etc. If you are not sure then you can ask your webmaster/programmer. If you are using them then you will need to purchase Windows base hosting plan.

- If you are not using any of above language and are using only PHP and html pages then you can purchase any plan Windows or Linux. Both are supporting PHP. But you will get better performance with Linux as many host do not allow to write rewrite rule in Windows which can be easily write on Linux using .htaccess.

Kailash: good points. I prefer linux because I am familiar with Linux and Solaris environment and use them on a day to day basis. But I have seen many people migrating from windows to linux because they are not able to get URL rewriting to work on their windows hosting :)

PHP + MySQL seems to be most popular combination nowadays (and has been like this for some time).

linux hosting is normally cheaper and not as limited as windows. i prefer linux for the flexibility.

yes, Linux+PHP+MySQL is the best combination and who are willing to install forums, blog, CMS then it is very easy to install as well as we can rewrite the URL easily compare to Windows.
