What are characteristics of starting the big SEO business that could also make profit and running expenses (salaries of about 10 employee, office rant, electricity bit etc.). post her your experience.

-Good Computer Hardware.
-Lots of Domains to Work.
-Good Web Hosting Facilities(Performance, Backup, Support, Availability).
-You should know about the basic concepts about SEO and all the various types of SEO strategies and marketing techniques which is helpful for running the SEO business and make profit from them.
-You should have good clientele.

I think you need to be able to show results first and foremost. After that of course you need to be profitable, but if you are making your clients $$ then you should have no problem getting them to compensate you accordingly.

It may take long time before you fully understand SEO principals and if you have no idea what is involved,
I would suggest you to hire Pro and let him run your SEO operation and you run business part.

Just look at this as if you're running Health Center or Barber shop where you have hired people to work for you.

I will suggest try to get some freelance projects first. Then day by day increase projects and other things also. (like resources, office, etc.)

For getting in to SEO business, you have to be thorough enough about the seo. You have to think in that way that how the competitor are working or, what kind of work you can have after establishing in to SEO business. There are other ways as well where you can find business generating, but the kind of employee you have , the infrastructure which do exist at your place are some of the very important aspect of SEO business.
